Three Glider Flights
Christopher Ashburn
Location: Warner Springs, California, USA
Date: 15/12/01 Track Length: 269
km Method: Pik 3Z
Comments: "We were not getting very high that day,
so I was practicing using smaller triangles within the valley. You can see with
a more aggressive flying style the glides get longer and straighter as the focus
is making progress rather than just staying up."

Location: Warner Springs, California, USA
Date: 29/09/01 Track Length: 526
km Method: Pik 3Z
Comments: "It's from a soaring flight in a glider
from the Southern California area. This flight's a little free form, but you
can see where the spirals are gaining height, and long descending paths gliding
from one place to another. It's about 50 miles top to bottom, so I guess the
flight's about 150 miles total in 4 hours. Just a Saturday afternoon pleasure
flight."

"The map is from flight analysis software I have that reads the source
data (that includes time) and displays it over a map.
The orange colours show climbing, the blues descending. Orientate yourself with
the large yellow blob labelled Palm Springs towards the top right."

Location: Tonopah, Nevada, USA Date:
27/07/01 Track Length: 525 km Method:
Pik 3Z
Comments: "It's hard to believe, but with an average
speed for this flight was over 88mph. I was quite a way down the score sheet
as the winner was 104mph!"

The GPS tracks have been rendered in POV-Ray
by Christopher Ashburn.
The Line is composed of a series of circles placed at the GPS coordinates.
This image is of the Monitor Valley about 50 miles NW of Tonopah.
It shows a glide into the hills and then a search for that thermal that sucked
me up at 800 feet per minute (10mph) for 6000ft.
